During the car-free week from May 27 to May 31, 2024, the children from Meppen diligently collected Green Footprints. This year, they achieved the amazing result of a total of 1,894 green miles – exactly 2 miles more than last year!
"Everyone involved participated with joy and enthusiasm, and we will try to top this result again next year," emphasized Sonja Immenga, a teacher at Johannes-Gutenberg-School in Meppen.
The attached photo shows the presentation of the results during the final assembly before the summer break. By taking part in the car-free week, not only was CO2 saved, but much was also learned about environmentally conscious behavior. The action demonstrated how small changes in everyday life can have a significant impact on the climate. The children learned how important it is to contribute to a sustainable future and the role each individual can play.
These insights are particularly relevant in light of the climate conference in Baku, where global solutions to climate change will be discussed. The Green Footprints collected in Meppen will also be handed over to the UN Climate Secretariat in Baku.
Through their commitment, the children have provided a practical example of how local actions can contribute to the fight against climate change. We are confident that their experiences and the knowledge they have gained will help them continue to make responsible decisions for our environment.
We are proud of the commitment shown by the children of Meppen and are already looking forward to seeing them collect again next year.
