Sweden-Green Footprints Edition 2025
Walking, Cycling, and Learning for a Safer and Greener Tomorrow
Sweden proudly joined the Green Miles campaign once again in 2025 through the popular national initiative “Gå & Cykla till Skolan” (Walk and Bike to School), organized by Trafikkalendern. The campaign encourages pupils, teachers, and families to choose smarter, healthier, and more climate-friendly ways of traveling to and from school- such as walking, cycling, or using public transport.
The primary goals of the initiative are twofold: - To improve road safety in children’s immediate surroundings ("för bättre trafiksäkerhet i barnens närmiljö")
- To contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly community
Schools across Sweden participate during a self-chosen two-week period in September or October, during which they compete to collect as many respoäng (travel points) as possible. These points are recorded using a fun and visual system of “Gröna och Orange Prickar” (green and orange dots), representing sustainable travel choices made by students in their everyday routines.
The campaign is open to pupils in Years F–6 (ages 6 to 12) and enjoys strong national engagement every year. Trafikkalendern awards national prizes to top-performing schools and classes, while many municipalities also celebrate local winners with additional recognition and rewards.
With every step and pedal, Sweden’s young citizens are actively shaping a safer and more sustainable future-while learning the importance of responsible mobility from an early age.
