Saarland
This year, the Kleinblittersdorf Elementary School in Saarland participated in the “Kindermeilen” event for the very first time!
As an award-winning “School of Sustainability,” the initiative fit perfectly with the school’s commitment to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).
For seven days, 176 students from 8 classes paid extra attention to: How do I get around? What ends up on my plate? And where can I save energy in my daily life?
In total, they racked up an impressive 1,654 climate miles.
This included 1,111 green miles for eco-friendly travel—walking, riding a scooter, biking, or taking the bus—297 red miles for regional and climate-friendly food, and 246 blue miles for smart energy-saving practices, such as turning off lights when not needed.
The week was complemented by the school’s own “Sustainability Challenge.”
In this challenge, the children could collect stamps in a personal booklet for small everyday tasks, ranging from picking up trash and gardening to acts of kindness like giving a compliment. After collecting five stamps, they even received small surprises like bird feed balls or lawn figures.
A great idea—one we hadn’t come across before!
The miles collected will now be included in the overall European total, which will be presented at the UN Climate Change Conference.
A heartfelt thank you to all the dedicated students and to the team at Kleinblittersdorf Elementary School for this fantastic start!
We’re already looking forward to your next steps in climate protection!
