The Swedish participants of the campaign
"Ga och cycla till Skolan/Walk and bike to school" joined us again!
The campaign engages pupils in the Years F–6 (ages 6–12) across the country, turning everyday trips into collective climate action.
Each year, Trafikkalendern awards national prizes to the schools and classes with the best results, while many municipalities celebrate their local champions with special recognitions.
Through their own drawings, they show us their wishes for road traffic, such as:
“Make the roads wider, with space for footpaths and cycle paths.”
“It would be good if there were footpaths and cycle paths alongside the roads in rural areas.”
“Fewer petrol cars that emit exhaust fumes, and more cycle paths!”
“A safe and pleasant journey to school.”
Or they remind us that being climate-friendly can also be ‘people-friendly’:
“Walking is good. It’s better than driving because it strengthens your legs instead of just sitting down.”
“Cycle or walk if you live near the school.”
“I usually cycle or walk to school. I have a good journey to school.”
The campaign encourages children, parents and teachers to travel to school in smart, healthy and sustainable ways – that is, on foot, by bike or by public transport.
At its heart, the campaign promotes three essential goals:
- Promote the health of children and young people.
- Improving road safety around schools and neighbourhoods.
- Protecting the environment by reducing car traffic and emissions.
During any two-week period in September or October, participating schools compete to earn as many points as possible for every climate-friendly journey. The activity not only reduces CO₂ emissions but also helps children develop lifelong habits of sustainable mobility and responsibility toward the planet.
